ART IN THE HEART OF KUCHING: RAINFOREST FRINGE FESTIVAL, 7 TO 16 JULY 2017

By Carolyn Oei, 26 June 2017

When we last wrote about Kuching, Sarawak, we observed that the city was in itself an authentic showcase of its arts and culture. As far as large contemporary showcases are concerned, the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) has been celebrating the world and Kuching’s artistic diversity against the backdrop of Kuching’s beautiful rainforests for the last 20 years.

From 7 to 16 July, Kuching will play host to another festival, the inaugural Rainforest Fringe Festival (RFF), which organisers describe as a prelude to the RWMF (14 – 16 July).

Organised and curated by the team behind the George Town Festival, the RFF will shine the spotlight on local Sarawak artists, photographers, designers and musicians.

Some of the touted highlights include Sada Kamek: Music of Sarawak, a concert featuring local and indigenous musicians such as Alena Murang, Tony Eusoff and At Adau. “Sada kamek” approximately translates from the local vernacular to “sounds of us” in English.

Several of the events will take place at The Old Courthouse, which has been refurbished and transformed into a food, arts and entertainment space.

Other treats RFF visitors can expect would be art and photographic exhibitions featuring work by Jimmy Nelson and K.F. Wong, screenings of films with a measure of a rainforest connection and talks. Also planned is an invitation-only fashion gala displaying the designs of Edric Ong, Tanoti, Ong Shunmugam and others.

Most of the events are free-admission and pre-registration may be required for selected events with capacity limitations.

Editor's note: This is an updated version of the original dated 04 June 2017, which stated, "The Old Courthouse, which has been refurbished and transformed into a food, arts and entertainment space operated by ChinaHouse, already an established name in the Penang and Langkawi arts and culture and lifestyle circles." ChinaHouse handed over operations of the space at the end of 2016.
